This personnel must be specifically informed about the possible hazards. Safety instructions
Safety instructions for powder-actuated direct fastening tools
- Do not tamper with or modify the fastening tool in any way.
- Use only fastening tools and items of equipment that are compatible with each other (base plates, fastener guides, magazines, pistons and fasteners) and consumables (fasteners and cartridges).
- Check the fastening tool and accessories for damage.
- Moving parts must be in full working order; make sure that they cannot jam. Comply with the instructions on cleaning and oiling in these operating instructions.
- All parts must be correctly installed to ensure faultless operation of the fastening tool. Damaged parts must be properly repaired or replaced by Hilti Service unless otherwise stated in the operating instructions.
- Use only Hilti DX cartridges, or other suitable cartridges that meet the minimum safety requirements.
- Use the fastening tool only for the applications defined in the section headed "Intended use".
- Do not attempt to drive fasteners into unsuitable base materials, for example material that is too thin, too hard, or too brittle. Driving a fastener into these materials can cause the fastener to break, splinter the material or be driven right through. Examples of unsuitable materials are:
- Weld seams in steel, cast iron, glass, marble, plastic, bronze, brass, copper, insulating material, hollow brick, ceramic brick, thin sheet metal (< 4 mm) and cellular concrete.
- Comply with the Hilti 'Direct Fastening Technology Manual' or the corresponding local Hilti 'Technical Guide to Fastening Technology'. Always also comply with the operating instructions of the fastener to be used.
- Only appropriately trained persons who have been duly authorized and informed of the possible hazards are allowed to operate or service this fastening tool.
- Wear your personal protective equipment while the tool is in use.
- Wear suitable eye protection and a hard hat.
- Wear protective gloves. The fastening tool can get hot in use.
- Wear ear protectors. The ignition of a propellant charge can damage the hearing.
- Wear non-skid shoes.
- Keep the workplace tidy. Objects which could cause injury should be removed from the working area. Disorder in the working zone can lead to accidents.
- Make sure that the working area is well lit and, when working in an enclosed space, make sure it is adequately ventilated.
- Never press the nosepiece of the fastening tool against your hand or any other part of the body! Never point the fastening tool toward other persons!
- Do not compress the fastening tool with your hand on the magazine or fastener guide, piston or piston guide or a loaded fastener. Compressing the fastening tool by hand can make the fastening tool ready to fire, even without a fastener guide installed. This gives rise to a risk of serious injury for yourself and others.
- Everyone in the vicinity must wear ear protection, eye protection and a hard hat.
- Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a direct fastening tool. Do not use the fastening tool when you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Stop working if you experience pain or feel unwell. A moment of inattention while operating the fastening tool can result in serious injury.
- Avoid working in awkward body positions. Make sure you work from a safe stance and stay in balance at all times.
- Keep the arms slightly bent while operating the fastening tool, do not straighten the arms.
- Keep other people away from the working area, especially children.
- Use the fastening tool only for its intended use and only when it is in faultless condition. Do not attempt to use the tool for purposes for which it is not intended.
- Do not use the fastening tool in places where there is a risk of fire and explosion.
- Before driving fasteners, check behind the object to make sure that no-one is present in line with the fasteners to be driven. Danger of fasteners penetrating right through!
- Make sure that the nosepiece of the fastening tool is never pointed toward yourself or other persons.
- Hold the fastening tool only by the gripping surfaces provided for the purpose.
- Keep the gripping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease.
- Pull the trigger only when the fastening tool is at right angles to and pressed fully against the work surface.
- Before starting work, check the selected energy setting.
- Carry out a test by driving fasteners into the base material.
- Always position the nosepiece of the fastening tool on smooth, flat surfaces free of obstructions and fully supported by the sub-structure.
- When driving fasteners, always hold the fastening tool at right angles to the work surface. This reduces the risk of a fastener being deflected by the base material.
- Do not drive fasteners into existing holes unless this is recommended by Hilti (e.g. DX-Kwik).
- Do not re-use a fastener that was used beforehand - risk of injury! Use a new fastener.
- Do not attempt to re-drive a fastener that was not driven in deeply enough! The fastener could break.
- Comply with the specifications for distances from edges and spacing between fasteners (see the section headed "Minimum distances").
- Never leave a loaded fastening tool unattended.
- Always unload the fastening tool (remove cartridges and fasteners) before cleaning, maintenance and care, changing the fastener guide, before work breaks and before storing the tool.
- Transport and store the fastening tool in the Hilti case intended for the purpose.
- Store fastening tools that are not in use in a dry, secure place where they are inaccessible to children.
- Do not exceed the maximum fastener driving rate recommended in the section headed "Technical data ".
- If the fastening tool overheats or if the cartridge strip deforms or melts, remove the cartridge strip and allow the fastening tool to cool down.
- Do not dismantle the fastening tool while it is hot. Allow the fastening tool to cool down.
- Use only cartridges that are suitable and approved for use with the fastening tool.
- Remove the cartridge strip when you are going to take a break and when you have finished the job, and before you transport the fastening tool.
- Do not use force to remove fasteners and/or cartridges from the magazine strip or the fastening tool.
- Store unused cartridges in accordance with the storage specifications for cartridges for powder-actuated fastening tools (e.g. dry, temperature between 5 °C and 25 °C) in a secured storage facility.
- Do not leave unused or partly used cartridge strips lying around. Collect the used cartridge strips and store the cartridge strips at a suitable location.
- Follow all instructions relating to safety, handling and storage in the safety data sheet of the cartridges.

Intended use
The product described is a fastening tool designed to drive special fasteners for fastening trapezoidal profile metal sheets to steel beams.
Possible misuse
The fastening tool may not be operated in atmospheres or environments where there is a risk of fire or explosion.The fastening tool may not be used with cartridges and fasteners other than those approved for use with this fastening tool.
The fasteners may not be driven into materials other than structural steel and, in particular, not into hardened steel, brittle steel, cast iron and spring steel.
Safety devices
The fastening tool features a 5-way safety system for the safety of the operator and any bystanders.Piston principleThe energy from the propellant charge is transferred to a piston, the accelerated mass of which drives the nail into the base material.
Through use of the piston principle, the tool is classed as a “Low Velocity Tool”. Approximately 95% of kinetic energy is taken up by the piston when the tool is fired. As the piston is always stopped by the tool as it reaches the end of its travel, excess energy is absorbed by the tool. Accordingly, when the tool is used correctly, dangerous through‐shots (i.e. with a nail muzzle velocity of over 100 m/s) are virtually impossible.
Drop-firing safety deviceThe drop-firing safety device is the result of coupling the firing mechanism with the cocking movement.
Trigger safety deviceThe trigger safety device prevents the tool firing when only the trigger is pulled. The tool must be pressed against a firm surface before a fastener can be driven.
Contact pressure safety deviceThe contact pressure safety device requires application by the operator of a contact pressure of at least 250 N, so a nail can be driven only when the tool is pressed fully against a firm surface with this or a higher force.
Unintentional firing safety deviceThe tool is equipped with an unintentional firing safety device. It prevents the tool from firing if the triggers are first pulled and the tool then pressed against the work surface. The tool can be fired only when it is first pressed fully against a firm surface and the triggers subsequently pulled.
Minimum distances and edge distances
You must always observe certain minimum distances and spacing when driving fasteners. They can differ, depending on the product.Service indicator
The service indicator display incorporated in the grip consists of the display plus the Bluetooth and reset buttons.The display indicates the temperature of the fastening tool with a view to allowing the operator to avoid overheating problems by adjusting the speed of use of the tool.
The service indicator display counts the number of fasteners driven and when the preconfigured limit is reached it indicates that cleaning or maintenance of the tool is due.
Using Bluetooth, the data shown in the service indicator display, including the number of fasteners driven and other information (e.g. the serial number of the tool, the number of fasteners driven since the last tool service, etc.), can be read by the Hilti Connect smartphone app.
After cleaning, the number of fasteners driven before cleaning is again due can be reset by pressing the reset button.
The service indicator and the built-in counter for the number of nails that can be driven before the next service is due are reset by Hilti Service when the tool is serviced.
The smartphone app can be used to activate demo mode in which the various messages indicated by the service interface over a period of 48 fasteners driven, up to and including the need for maintenance, are presented.
The smartphone app can also be used to deactivate demo mode. Demo mode is automatically deactivated after a period of 15 minutes.

This product is equipped with a Bluetooth ® Low Energy Module which enables the status checking of a tool and the transfer of settings and data based on Bluetooth ® wireless technology, a data transfer system by which the two Bluetooth-enabled products can communicate with each other over a short distance. This product is designed to enable communication and data transfers between smart phones and Hilti gateway. The tool can submit data attributes such as location of the receiving device, runtime, total application count, application count during interval and timestamp of transfer. Information about the connectivity functions offered can be found in the respective Hilti application (app) or in the operating instructions of the tool you are using.Data transmission via Bluetooth ®
The data transmission interval can vary depending on the available power source of the tool and the status of the tool. The signal range may vary greatly depending on external conditions, including the receiving device used. The Bluetooth ® range may be significantly weaker inside closed rooms and through metallic barriers (e g. walls, shelving units, cases, etc.). Depending on ambient conditions, several transmission intervals may be required before the tool is detected.If the tool is not detected, check the following:
• Is the distance to the mobile terminal device too great?
→ Reduce the distance between the mobile terminal device and the tool.
Installing and setting up the app
In order to be able to use the connectivity functions, you first have to install the respective Hilti app.(1.) Download the app from the corresponding app store (Apple App Store, Google Play Store).
(2.) After starting the app for the first time, please either log in with your account or register.
(3.) The display of your mobile terminal device will show you all the subsequent steps required to connect the tool to the mobile terminal device.
Requirements to be met by cartridges
Use only the Hilti DX cartridges listed in this table, or other suitable cartridges that are compliant with the minimum safety requirements:- It is a requirement for EFTA countries that the cartridges must be CE-compliant and must bear the CE mark of compliance.
- It is a requirement for the United Kingdom that the cartridges must be UKCA-compliant and must bear the UKCA mark of compliance.
- It is a requirement for the USA that the cartridges must be compliant with the stipulations set out in ANSI A10.3-2020.
- It is a requirement for the non-European member states of the C.I.P. that the cartridges must have C.I.P. approval for the DX fastening tool used.
- It is a requirement for the remaining countries that the cartridges must have passed the firing-residues test in accordance with EN 16264 and must have a manufacturer's declaration to this effect.

Establishing the position of the fasteners
To avoid incorrectly driven fasteners, proceed as follows:- Each time you lay a metal sheet in position on the steel beams, use a water-resistant pen to mark the area in which fasteners can be driven.
Checking that the tool is ready for use
- Make sure that there are no cartridge strips and no nail strips in the tool.
- Check the fastening tool for visible signs of damage, especially to the components shown in the illustration.

- Have the tool repaired by Hilti Service.

- Press the tool against the working surface until a definite resistance is felt and then check the position of the pressure pin.
Result 1 / 2The pressure pin is not pressed down – the spring on the pressure pin is not compressed.
The tool has detected no nail and thus cannot be pressed against the working surface. The tool is working correctly.
Result 2 / 2The pressure pin is pressed all the way down, the spring on the pressure pin is compressed and a click is heard when the trigger is pressed.

Loading fastener strips
- Insert 4 fastener strips in the magazine from above.

- Insert the cartridge strips from above in the cartridge loading channel.
Materials 6.8/18 M40 red, black, blue cartridge (see the cartridge recommendation in the instructions for use of the fasteners) - Press the cartridge strip into the cartridge loading channel until it lies flush with the top edge of the cartridge loading channel.
Opening the rotating sleeve
- Turn the rotating sleeve as far as it will go. Use the scraper or some other tool as an aid, if necessary.
Closing the rotating sleeve
- Check whether the slot in the front of the tool is closed.
- The slot is not fully closed.

Operation
If resistance is unusually high when you insert the cartridge strip, check whether the cartridge strip is compatible with this fastening tool.Always use the protective cap for work that can produce flying splinters.

Driving fasteners
- Press the tool fully against the working surface at right angles.
- Press the trigger buttons on the grip.
- Position the tool at the point where the next fastener is to be driven and repeat the steps described. In doing so, observe the information shown in the display.
Checking the nail stand-off
- Use the test gauge to check the nail stand-off.
- Nail stand-off is within the required range.
Result 2 / 3
- Nail stand-off is too high.
- Increase the power setting by turning the power regulation wheel to the next higher setting.
- If the power regulation wheel is already set to the highest value, use a more powerful cartridge type – if available.
- Nail stand-off is too low.
- Reduce the power setting by turning the power regulation wheel to the next lower setting.
- If the power regulation wheel is already set to the lowest value, use a less powerful cartridge type – if available.
- Drive another fastener.
- Repeat the previously described steps until the correct nail stand-off is achieved.
Adjusting the power setting
- Turn the power regulation wheel to set the desired nail driving power.
- The current power setting is indicated.
- The current power setting is indicated.
Removing cartridges from the tool
- Press the cartridge strips forward, as far as possible, in the direction of advance.
- Pull the cartridge strips out of the tool at the cartridge strip exit aperture.
Removing fasteners from the tool
- Check that the cartridges have already been removed from the tool.
- Stand the tool on its grip.
- Press the red latch at the mouth of the magazine and allow the nail strips to slide back out of the magazine.
- While pressing the catch, pull the nail strip out of the tool.
- If the nail strip does not project from the base plate, work through the sequence of steps below.
- If the nail strip does not project from the base plate, work through the sequence of steps below.
- Stand the tool upright in the working position.
- Press the stop.
- Cycle the tool until the nail strip projects from the tool.
Care and maintenance
Check the piston and piston stopper and replace the parts if necessary
- Pull the piston out of the piston guide.
- Pull the piston stopper out of the base plate (possibly with the aid of the piston).
- Check the piston and piston stopper for damage. Check the piston for straightness by rolling it on a smooth surface.
Result If damage is found and/or if the piston is bent or jammed with the piston stopper
- Replace the piston and piston stopper as a set.
- Replace the piston and piston stopper as a set.
- Pull out the catch and hold it in this position. Insert the piston, pushing it in until the tip of the piston no longer projects beyond the end of the tool, and then release the catch.
- Insert the piston stopper (rubber part to the front) into the base plate.
Disassembling the base plate
- Stand the tool on its grip.
- Press the magazine release button (red button) on the magazine and allow the magazine to slide down.
- Rotate the base plate in a counter clockwise direction, until the connection is released.
- Lift off the base plate.
Fitting the base plate
- Make sure that the piston stopper is correctly fitted in the base plate and that the piston guide and the piston are correctly seated in the tool.
- Press the base plate against the thread.
- Rotate the base plate in a clockwise direction as far as it will go.
- Rotate the base plate back slightly until it is in its starting position relative to the magazine.
- Push the magazine back until it engages with the base plate.
Cleaning the fastening tool
- Pull the catch out and hold it in this position. Pull the piston out of the piston guide and then release the catch.
- Pull the piston stopper out of the base plate. If necessary, use the piston to lever the piston stopper out of the base plate.
- Pull the catch out and hold it in this position. Pull the piston guide upwards out of the tool and then release the catch.
- Clean the inside of the tool. Then stand the tool upside down and tap it firmly with your hand so that the dirt falls out.
- Use the large accessory wire brush to clean the surfaces of the piston guide (see marked area).
- Use the small round brush to clean the cartridge chamber and the adjoining holes for the power regulation pin.
- Use the narrow round brush to clean the cartridge guideway.
- Use Hilti lubricant spray to lubricate the moving parts of the fastener strip guides.
- Slide the piston guide into the tool from above, until the catch engages.
- Pull out the catch and hold it in this position. Insert the piston, pushing it in until the tip of the piston no longer projects beyond the end of the tool, and then release the catch.
- Insert the piston stopper (rubber part to the front) into the base plate.
- Fit the base plate.
- Press the reset button for at least 1 second to reset the counter for the number of fasteners driven until the next scheduled cleaning operation is due.
- Check that the tool is ready for use.

Troubleshooting
Remedying malfunctions after misfiring
- Press the nose of the tool against the working surface and pull the trigger.
- A click is audible, but the cartridge does not fire.
- Lift the tool away from the working surface. When doing so, never point the tool toward yourself or other persons.
- Advance the cartridge strip manually to the next cartridge by pushing it by hand at the cartridge feed side or, alternatively, by pulling the cartridge strip through manually to the next cartridge at the cartridge strip exit side.
- Use up the remaining cartridges on the strip. The partly-used cartridge strip must then be removed and disposed of appropriately to prevent further use or misuse of any unfired cartridges.
- Lift the tool away from the working surface. When doing so, never point the tool toward yourself or other persons.

Clearing the jammed tool
- Press the tool vertically down on to a solid surface, pull the triggers and listen to the resulting noise.

- There is now no triggerable cartridge in the cartridge magazine of the tool.
- Proceed to the next step in the troubleshooting routine.
- ATTENTION! Make sure that the tool's nail discharge muzzle is not pointing toward anyone.

- Press the nose of the tool in a few millimeters and open the rotating sleeve.

- Pull the catch out and hold it in this position. If the tool does not open up by itself try pulling it open, without applying more than ordinary muscle power.
- ATTENTION! Make sure that the tool's nail discharge muzzle is not pointing toward anyone.

- Cease work and lay the tool down at a safe place.
- Make sure that the tool cannot be accessed by other persons.
- Notify Hilti Service immediately.

- Disassemble the base plate.
- Check the piston and piston brake and replace these parts if necessary.
- Clean the fastening tool.
